From 26 July to 5 August 2006, Montréal will host the 1st World Outgames, a sport and cultural event unprecedented in the history of the LGBT movement in terms of its scale and its reach. Montréal will welcome 16.000 participants and 250.000 visitors for a celebration of gay and lesbian culture, open to all. Sports, culture and human rights will be celebrated in a festive and inclusive atmosphere of international friendship.
The 1st World Outgames will open with the International Conference on LGBT Human Rights, which will be held from 26 to 29 July 2006. Then, on 29 July, the Opening Ceremony will be presented at the Olympic Stadium, kicking off a week-long programme of 35 sport competitions on 52 different sites and cultural activities not to mention the parties and outdoor entertainment in the Village each evening during the week of the games.
More that 100 countries are represented in the Outgames a first for a LGBT sporting event. The Outgames will also be the first LGBT event to which participants from Southern Hemisphere countries will be coming in significant numbers.
